Lexington police identify worst roads, intersections

Each year, the Lexington Police Department issues a traffic report that is full of details. Their 2017 report lists the three top locations for intersection collisions and between-street collisions.

The area of East New Circle Road between Palumbo Drive and Life Lane/Woodhill Drive was the top location with 44 collisions. It was also the top location in 2016 with 56 collisions.

The top reasons for collisions on this stretch of road include:

  • Following too close: 31.8 percent
  • Not under proper control: 20.9 percent
  • Inattention: 16.4 percent
  • Distraction: 14.5 percent
  • Failure to yield right of way: 9.1 percent
  • Misjudge clearance: 3.6 percent
  • Other: 3.7 percent

Top intersection for collisions

The intersection of North Broadway and West New Circle Road was the top intersection for collisions with 28.

The top reasons for collisions at this intersection include:

  • Failure to yield right of way: 19.4 percent
  • Misjudge clearance: 13.9 percent
  • Inattention: 13.9 percent
  • Disregard traffic control: 11.1 percent
  • Following too close: 8.3 percent
  • Not under proper control: 5.6 percent
  • Distraction: 5.6 percent
  • Other conditions including lost consciousness, speed, drug or alcohol involvement: 22.2 percent

Other top roads, intersections

There were other roads and intersections that had multiple collisions in 2017.

At the top among the stretches of road were Newtown Pike between Aristides Boulevard and Sugar Maple Lane with 38 collisions, and Man O’ War Boulevard between Alumni Drive and Easthills Drive with 37 collisions.

Among the most dangerous intersections was Man O’ War Boulevard and Richmond Road with 26 collisions and Man O’ War Boulevard and Nicholasville Road with 24 collisions.

In all of Lexington, there were 191 collisions involving pedestrians in 2017 with nine fatalities.
